I've just never encountered a movie character and had no idea by the end of the movie how the filmmaker wanted the audience to perceive him/her. But we're still supposed to like him at some point, right? Forgive him, buy his redemption? If SW is like a "fairy tale" or "myth," why on earth have him commit patricide, an action which - in fairy tales and myths! - basically guarentee doom (being, historically/culturally speaking, one of the most heinous sins one can commit)?Īt this point, I just can't imagine Lucasfilm allowing Kylo to survive the trilogy. Kylo is alternately depicted as "Sympathetic! Conflicted!" (well, we're told more than shown) and "You only show a guy doing this when you want the audience to hate him."Īre we supposed to see him as a complex, 3-dimensional person (Conplex psychology/circumstances/etc), and not a traditional broad-stroke villain? And if so, can't we also judge him a complex, 3-dimensional person (mass murder + patricide makes you evil, period, the end)? Or expect that a person that broken and twisted needs a LOT more time to reach a semblance of normalcy than the 4.5 hours left in the ST? May the Force be with you.īut there's also the rest of the whole dang movie.
